The sky is being watched. Most of it has an explanation.

UAP Finder is a network of sky cameras and phones that record what moves at night, then try hard to explain it away — against satellite catalogues, live aircraft transponders and the positions of every bright star. What survives all of that is what's worth looking at.

It says what it ruled out

Most sighting sites publish a claim. This one publishes the negative evidence: how many catalogue satellites were propagated to that exact time and place, how many aircraft were transmitting overhead, and how far away the nearest of each was.

And it tells you when it couldn't check. "Nothing was there" and "the catalogue failed to download" are very different statements, and only one of them is evidence.

Nothing is typed in

There is no form where you describe what you saw. A camera watches, motion is detected and tracked frame by frame, and the object's path across the sky is measured in degrees with a stated uncertainty.

The output is a measurement, not a memory — which is why it can be checked.

Two observers beat one

When two people in different places record the same object, their sight lines are triangulated to compute how high it actually was. That is geometry, not a vote count.

Corroborated sightings have their video kept permanently, so the evidence outlives any one device.

What the engine can decide

Every detection gets one of these, with the reasoning attached. A label is always advisory — classification never deletes or hides a clip.

Changed course Broke its own path mid-track. Satellites are in free fall and aircraft turn over kilometres — neither does this.
Unexplained Real motion that matched no satellite pass, no aircraft, and no meteor signature.
Satellite Matched a predicted pass from the orbital catalogue, at a matching apparent speed.
Aircraft An ADS-B transponder was where the object was, moving as fast as it appeared to.
Meteor Fast, brief and straight, then gone.
Orb look-alike A stationary point exactly where a bright star or planet was. A defocused Vega renders as a glowing disc — this is the false positive, named.
UAP/UFO The one label the software never applies. Only the person who filmed it can set this, after watching it back — and the engine's own verdict is kept underneath and shown beside it, so you can always see what the machine made of the same clip.

What is UAP Finder?

UAP Finder is an open platform that records unidentified aerial phenomena using network sky cameras and phones. It detects moving objects automatically, measures their path across the sky, and correlates each one against satellite catalogues, live aircraft transponder data and the positions of known stars and planets. It publishes both the classification it reached and the evidence it ruled out along the way.

Does an "unexplained" sighting mean it is alien?

No. "Unexplained" means the detection pipeline matched no known explanation — no predicted satellite pass, no aircraft where the object was, no meteor signature, and no star at that position. It is a statement about what was ruled out, not a claim about what the object was. UAP Finder makes no extraterrestrial claim anywhere.

How does it tell a real object from a satellite or a plane?

By geometry and timing rather than appearance. The object's angular track is measured in degrees across the sky, then compared against orbital elements propagated to that exact moment and against live ADS-B aircraft positions. A match requires the reference object to be where the detection was AND to appear to move at a matching speed — merely being somewhere in a wide camera frame is a coincidence, not a match.

What is an orb look-alike?

A bright point that stays fixed against the star field and sits exactly where a known star or planet was at that instant. Through a lens that is slightly out of focus, a bright star like Vega or a planet like Venus renders as a glowing ringed disc, which is very commonly reported as an orb. UAP Finder labels these explicitly rather than letting them sit in the unexplained pile.

Why is a course change treated separately?

Because nothing else in the sky does it. A satellite is in free fall on a fixed orbit, a meteor is a rock on a ballistic path, and an aircraft turns over kilometres and many seconds. An object that climbs and then turns within a few seconds of frame is making a different kind of claim from one that is merely unrecognised, so it gets its own category.

Are exact locations published?

No. Observer coordinates are deliberately fuzzed before publication and the exact position never leaves the server. Published sky bearings carry a stated uncertainty and record whether they are referenced to true or magnetic north.

What does witness-verified mean?

That a person watched the clip and attested that they believe it is genuinely anomalous. It is stored completely separately from the engine's classification, so the two can be compared rather than confused. It is evidence that someone claims a thing — never evidence that the thing is true.

Can I use the data?

Yes. Public sightings are readable without an account from the JSON API at /api/reports, and each sighting page carries schema.org Dataset and Observation markup.
